Musical Museum

The Musical Museum is located in Brentford of Greater London and houses one of the biggest collections of musical instruments from different times in the world. The museum was founded in 1963 by Frank Holland, an enthusiast of music and heritage. One of the main landmarks of Brentford, the museum is housed in a modern building. The work of volunteers is the heart of the museum’s daily functioning.

Things to see and do

Any person interested in the history and development of music will find the collection in this London music museum a treasure. In the past the artefacts that now stand on display in the museum used to be played in homes, showrooms, or on the streets. The collection consists of a variety of instruments, ranging from music boxes to organs. An exploration of the exhibits will demonstrate the diversity of the types and models of past musical instruments.

One of the exhibits is the Tomasso Street Barrel Piano; the tunes of this instrument were heard on the streets of nineteenth-century London. However, the music has not died, and the galleries of the museum are filled with the melodies of the instruments on display, providing visitors with an opportunity to get acquainted with their sounding.

The museum offers tours on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays that give further insight into the collection. Like many other museums across Britain, this music museum in London has developed its own set of activities. Depending on the date, this could be a film showing, a concert, or a workshop. Visitors can also have a snack or coffee in the museum’s tea room.

Throughout the year the museum is open daily Tuesday to Sunday, between 11:00 and 17:30. Last admission is at 16:30.

Standard entry costs £8. Concessions at £6.50. Children under 16 are given free entry when accompanied by an adult.
